An apt simile

I'm not sure Damien understood quite how funny this was, if one presumes that he is referring to Larry's fans and the Dread Ilk:
In the social media era, we lend authors immediate credibility when we follow them. I’m thinking of some of our right wing friends here who deploy their fans like paramilitary forces. Strange times!
I have to admit, I did laugh at that one. What the Left simply can't seem to understand is that when they attack an author for his beliefs, they are providing motivation to all of his fans who happen to share those beliefs, because the fans uunderstand that it is not the author, but their own beliefs that are under attack. The author is merely the symbol.

Also, our fans tend to be intrinsically more capable than those of our left wing counterparts. That's not pandering or anything, it's just that theirs don't tend to be good for much more than fawning, favoriting tweets, feigning outrage, and pretending to donate money they don't have.

Spot on. Maybe the Left will figure it out someday.

OT

In unrelated news, tonight at 7pm Mountain Standard Time folks from the GIG will be transmitting worldwide on the 20 meter amateur radio frequency band their stories of Jesus' saving grace. Don't know the frequency yet, that's up to the control operators.

This will be my final GIG in Roswell, although I expect Bart, Jim, Jeanette and the other to continue. Tomorrow will be my family's last Sunday in Roswell. We are being transferred to San Francisco.

The author is merely the symbol.

I disagree, the author is key terrain, a place to rally, learn and sally from. God's blessings on the VD, his family, and the Ilk.

Anonymous Susan June 28, 2014 5:52 PM

You could also substitute Hollywood actors for authors in this piece. There are some people who are addicted to movies and TV who just can't understand why some of their fellow citizens will not reward actors with our hard earned money when they so obviously delight in mocking and insulting 1/2 of their audience. Instead we are chided for our inability to separate the reality(real life) from the fantasy(it's just a movie). Not true at all. Some of us have broken the addiction.

Anonymous Susan June 28, 2014 5:55 PM

@Beau,

From Roswell to San Francisco huh? There has just GOT to be a joke in there somewhere. Going from the far out to the seriously weird maybe? Good luck with your move Beau and God bless your efforts in the land of S & G.

If right-wingers deploy their fans, it's "paramilitary" and sinister.

When left-wingers deploy their fans, they're raising social consciousness.

No, we don't. We lend them followers. It's not the same thing, though many (such as, obviously, Damien) conflate them. All the followers in the world can't give someone credibility. Our president is living proof of that.

Greyland, writing to the Guardian via email, said that she had not spoken out before “because I thought that my mothers fans would be angry with me for saying anything against someone who had championed women's rights and made so many of them feel differently about themselves and their lives. I didn't want to hurt anyone she had helped, so I just kept my mouth shut”.

It sounds like Greyland had fully internalized the Clinton Exception.

What is with the irrepressible urge of our "left wing" friends to involve something as crass as politics into discussions about literature and art these days. I hardly think Miller or Salinger or Kesey worried about the political views of their "followers" beyond the hope that their readers enjoyed the work for it's own sake. If they received some edification through reading then all the better. May I suggest refocusing your concern about "right wing friends" and their "paramilitary followers" into the development of your craft, i.e. writing a decent story? Not everything has to be political. Strange times indeed.

Damien,
It’s weird that you are trying to make an article about a really sick, twisted, lefty pervert into an opportunity to attack “Righty’s” because their fans comment on things. You trying to identify blue team commenting on blogs and voting on awards as somehow being equivalent to when a pink teamer engages in incestuous sodomy is a keen insight into just how mentally defective you are.

O God, who brought your servant Abraham out of the land of the Chaldeans, protecting him in his wanderings, who guided the Hebrew people across the desert, we ask that you watch over us, your servants, as we walk in the love of your name.

Be for us our companion on the walk,
Our guide at the crossroads,
Our breath in our weariness,
Our protection in danger,
Our shelter on the Royal Road
Our shade in the heat,
Our light in the darkness,
Our consolation in our discouragements,
And our strength in our intentions.

So that with your guidance we may arrive safe and sound at the end of the Road and enriched with grace and virtue we return safely to our homes filled with joy.

In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

As G Edward Griffin has noted, it has nothing to do with the phony "right vs left or conservative vs liberal" mythology.
It is only aptly described as The Individual vs The Collective
Period. Exclamation point.

That reminds me of this bit by lefty comedian, Louis CK:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHnsajl-kB8

He seriously thinks if the gub'mint wasn't telling people to kill, then people would be killing each other all over the place. He apparently forgets there's such a thing as vigilanteism (and preventing THAT is what the murder laws were created for. In a world where revenge could be handed out disproportionately, depending on the size and bloodthirstiness of the victim's family--you'd better believe that people would think twice before murdering any random stranger.)
