Rabid Puppies 2016: Best Graphic Story
The preliminary recommendations for the Best Graphic Story Hugo:
As always, the humor to be found in the File 770ers isn't in the fact that they are so observably stupid, but that they are so firmly in the grip of Dunning-Kruger that despite that observable stupidity, they genuinely believe they are the smarter, better-educated ones. Tasha Turner comments on yesterday's Best Dramatic Performance recommendations:
Forget whether it is bad or not, if you can't mock someone without looking almost indescribably stupid, it's probably an activity you should avoid at all costs.
- GamerGate Life by Kukuruyo
- Full Frontal Nerdity by Aaron Williams
- Erin Dies Alone by Cory Rydell and Grey Carter
- Awkward Zombie by Katie Friedrich
- Gunnerkrigg Court by Tom Siddell

Tasha Turner comments on yesterday's Best Dramatic Performance recommendations:
All games? Really? Well the category should be RP free as its always well nominated.Keep in mind this was someone who was attempting to mock my Hugo recommendations. But she didn't know, without looking it up or noticing the fact that I specifically mentioned that three of my five recommendations were games, that The Martian and Avengers: Age of Ultron are movies.
Kurt Busiek corrects her: THE MARTIAN and AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON are not games. The other three are.
*head desk* well I was wrong. Sorry VD. I should have checked before commenting. In the future I’ll try to be more careful before mocking you. It’s always bad to mock someone else and I really shouldn’t do it at all.

Lack of reading comprehension and complete disconnect from popular scifi... Yet they think they should control the Hugos.
The fact that she didn't recognize The Martian as a book means she's not well read enough to nominate in the Hugo's herself.
Head-desk, this was tho movie nomination.
Gunnerkrigg Court recently gave us not one, but two big, fat, awful, in-your-face gay/lesbian subplots (involving the main characters no less!) and so I personally wouldn't feel comfortable recommending it anywhere these days.
Tasha "Turner"? I looked at zher picture and couldn't tell if zhit was male or female at first. Then I noticed the big doo-rag she was wearing and went, "Hmm".
A quick click on her gravatar led me to a page where she mentioned all the Jewish books and paraphernalia in her house.
And then it hit me.
She is the spitting image of one of those chunky, plain, ultra-tzniusdik matrons from some 19th century shtetl.
Who could have guessed that a conservative Jewish peasant matron would be so interested in SciFi?
Heck, with that mug an headcovering she would fit right in at Kiryas Joel, New Skvere or Williamsburg.
Go figure.
My Favorite web comic is from Finnish Artist Minna Sundberg. 'Stand Still, Stay Silent'. A plague has ravaged the world turning people and animals into monsters. Iceland and a few other Scandanavian Islands survived due to stopping all immigration. Now years later a small group of people explore the Silent World looking for books from the Old World.
I don't think they should avoid it at all costs. I want them each to have a mic.
I've snuck up on them myself, right in their own territory. Oh, they do hate that. I did laugh, I did. And I remembered. "You cannot do or say that!" "Oh, you mean, I can't do or say what I just did and said?" Right. I know, I know, I know, I know-ow.
Grunnerkrig Court is OK. but Quantum Vibe,Widdershins, and Not a Villain are all better.
> My Favorite web comic is from Finnish Artist Minna Sundberg. 'Stand Still, Stay Silent'.
I've got it bookmarked and given it a try, but it's a slow read. Not for those who like fast paced action. I may get back to it eventually.
If we're nominating webcomics, I have to put in a good word for Sluggy Freelance. 17 years worth of story and it's only getting better as all the plot threads start wrapping up.
Skylark Thibedeau wrote:My Favorite web comic is from Finnish Artist Minna Sundberg. 'Stand Still, Stay Silent'.
Blast you, now I have another time-sink.
At least there's a lot less back story to read than trying to catch up in Schlock Mercenary or Freefall.
It's VD's show. If he wanted our suggestions he would have asked.
I'm just happy to make fun of his awful taste. Except he ruined that too by saying they weren't his favorite.
> At least there's a lot less back story to read than trying to catch up in Schlock Mercenary or Freefall.
Or Kevin and Kell. :)
@6 Seconded on "Stand Still Stay Silent" but there might be a problem with eligibility. Apparently web comics slip through the nomination cracks unless they are published in book-form the year they are published online, or something. I'm no WorldCon eligibility lawyer, though.
Also, "mocking the mis-mocking mockers" has a catchy ring to it.

Ditto.
It's like when you're watching a movie like "Jack the Giant Killer" where the retarded member of the group tries to copy his peers and mock another character, and there is an awkward silence after they display their stupidity.
But then, it sometimes feels that way when someone who considers themselves "bright" because their IQ is in the 120s opens their mouth and repeats something dumb.
This person at least expressed sorrow for getting it wrong. There may be some hope for them wayyyyyyy in the future.
I have to say also, her production rate is pretty incredible, and so far no hints of SJW.
How do you not know that the avengers was a movie?
Unrelated .... Milo made it to Drudge Report.

@18
Or, for that matter, The Martian?
Seriously, you don't even need to be a science fiction fan to know that.
I mean, its got Matt Damon in it for God's sake.

The premise is fatally flawed. Telling Scandinavians to stop immigration is like trying to keep a fattie from eating cake. They can't do it.

Quite the contrary in both cases. The proper attitude is that you ought not to expect people to change, but people do make positive changes all the time. Even fatties and Scanditards.
Even fatties and Scanditards. Ever the optimist, eh? :)

well, you see, she spends so much brain cycle trying to pretend to be Jewish that she hasn't time to pretend to keep up with your goy trash.
trying to keep up with the 3rd and 24th highest grossing films of 2015 is just, you know, beyond her.
gotta lurv Greg Hullander. he got triggered so much by the callback to the Dire Straits song that he got induced to virtue signal.

"It’s impossible to read the parody without being reminded of the source it came from, so I have to say I didn’t enjoy reading it very much."
Glyer, you insensitive PIG! reminding people of song lyrics from 1985. how DARE you.
*back of hand to forehead*
Lord, it seems you have triggered a few of the usuals on a subconcious level. By nominating games you have indirectly conjured the boogie man of GamerGate rapists... as illustrated by some of the more "sensitives" in the comments thread.
I mean, its got Matt Damon in it for God's sake.

Sorry for the double post of the Matt Damon link... didn't see Ron Winkleheimer got there first.
A quick click on her gravatar led me to a page where she mentioned all the Jewish books and paraphernalia in her house.
I even went on to her (cob-)website. She's a "coach" and a Social Media Consultant. And her website is the most busted piece of crap I've seen in a long time. She wants to charge $75 an hour to train people how to use Twitter, and the website where she promotes her business looks like a High School project abandoned unfinished at the end of the semester.
So much dead weight in our society.

Minna Self Published Volume 1 sometime last year I think.

It is after all a Fantasy
Yes I know it's Vox's show and as the Ilk we will vote for the suggestions above but I haven't read them yet and wanted to share one I had read.

@27
No worries. That's one of the funniest parts of the movie. Worth watching twice.

In all seriousness thanks for the suggestion as the premise sounds cool.
> Yes I know it's Vox's show and as the Ilk we will vote for the suggestions above but I haven't read them yet and wanted to share one I had read.
Well, yeah. That's what the comments are for. Vox isn't going to care if we exchange our favorites. He might even check some of them out if they catch his interest. Not a Villain is even a comic about an mmorpg. And speaking of game oriented comics, there's always Inherit the Earth, which was a petty good game of its type.
I haven't read Awkward Zombie since that one strip where It was asserted that Miranda Lawson of Mass Effect fame was a racist character because of her, a white woman, being a "genetically-perfect" human or something to that effect.

I'm a fucking ray of sunshine and don't you forget it.
But she didn't know, without looking it up or noticing the fact that I specifically mentioned that three of my five recommendations were games, that The Martian and Avengers: Age of Ultron are movies.
More likely she didn't even read the piece beyond the third sentence. That's kind of how they operate.
Or she read another SJW comment on the piece and was being a Mynah Bird.
Glad to see RP is tackling this category this year. The felgercarb that the SJWs got nominated for Sasquan was awful.
Gunnerkrigg Court lost me a few chapters after Kat suddenly turned into a lesbian. I figured it was all downhill from there, but perhaps it merits a second look.
If the Hugos consider what Tolkien would distinguish as 'talking animal stories' to be fantasy, Lackadaisy is gorgeously illustrated and highly entertaining. The latest pages have introduced a voodoo cult whose hoodoo seems to work in-universe, which could push the comic into urban-alternate-history-fantasy territory; but with rumrunning cats.
It's VD's show. If he wanted our suggestions he would have asked.
That's why these are PRELIMINARY recommendations. I think I need to take a closer look at Gunnerkrigg Court before the final recommendations are provided. We've already learned that one of my Best New Writer recommendations was ineligible, for example.
James Dixon wrote:Grunnerkrig Court is OK. but Quantum Vibe,Widdershins, and Not a Villain are all better.
Thanks for the link to Quantam Vibe, wasn't sure I'd like it, but the sci-fi elements hooked me a few more pages in.

Same. Enjoyed the characters, art, and setting ... and then the homosexuality normalization started creeping in.
> Same. Enjoyed the characters, art, and setting ... and then the homosexuality normalization started creeping in.
One of the characters in Widdereshins is a lesbian, but it's not a big part of the story.
> Lackadaisy
That looks really good. Thanks.
"Lackadaisy" is easily the best webcomic I've ever read. the artwork is on another level of stunning, and the writing is brilliant. It's only flaw is that it doesn't update enough, but I really, really can't recommend it enough.
I think having talking animals would qualify it as a certain version of fantasy.
It's essentially in the same genre as Disney's Robin Hood, but with tommy guns and blackjacks instead of bows and swords. If it got enough nominations to make the ballot, I suppose that would, in itself, demonstrate that many readers considered it fantasy/speculative fiction.
Plus, the headlines would be great: "Rabid Puppies love Lackadaisy Cats".
Wait, who am I kidding, they'd read "Cynophobic Wrongfans nominate Americentric Feline Supremacist webcomic".
Gunnerkrigg Court used to be my favorite webcomic, but it dropped off after the author decided out of nowhere that the heroine's best friend should become a lesbian (both are early HS age). I was less annoyed by the "lesbian" than by the "out of nowhere," but it actually bothered a young teen girl I know badly enough that she quit reading.
For recommendations, my favorites are Order of the Stick, a long runner which IMO has earned a Hugo nod, Rusty & Co, a wacky dungeon-crawling spoof, and Erfworld, a wargaming comic. I like Full Frontal Nerdity, but IMO PS238 is a much better comic by the same author.
As long as we're dropping names:

@46. Scholar-at-Arms.
In that vein, what bothers me most about Kat's change is that no matter how good the storytelling might remain, I can't really share the comic to my younger brothers anymore. We were similarly pissed at the sucker punch ending of Legend of Korra.
Thanks for the Erfworld recommendation. It had me at "Prepare to end the turn!". I've been looking on and off for a good tabletop gaming comic since Dork Tower went full SJW. I'll have to give OotS another look too, now that I've actually played some D&D.
Perhaps a bit of a stretch, but if 'Dramatic Presentation' can encompass video games, can 'Graphic Story' encompass any tabletop games that tell a story? Magic: The Gathering's Khans of Tarkir block wrapped up last year with Fate Reforged and Dragons of Tarkir, and did a good job of telling a time travel story using only images and flavor text.
> I'll have to give OotS another look too, now that I've actually played some D&D.
It's very much a genre work, but it's pretty good for that genre.
Heh, speaking of computer games and comics, there's today's Sandra and Woo.
I'm a fucking ray of sunshine and don't you forget it.
LOL. I sense a kindred spirit.
For webcomics there is one that for a while I thought was made by the biggest shitlord on the internet but I finally realized it was an actual feminist that couldn't be parodied. I still read it because you couldn't do better.

FYI: As per Vox' instructions a few posts back, I emailed for my Hugo nomination password and got it rather quickly.
Pierce O:
Yeah, I felt really bad; I had recommended it and she's the same age as Kat and Annie and a sensitive kid, really got upset by it. It gave me a new perspective on "think of the children" approaches to storytelling.
Glad you like Erfworld! It's been plagued with production difficulties, but it has turned out an excellent story anyway.
> Thanks for the link to Quantam Vibe,
The same site has a number of other comics you might like.
Have any of you read Unsounded? Truly an original fantasy world if every I've read one. The art, dialogue, and characters are similarly fantastic. Moreover, the author is one of those rare fantasy artists that doesn't have progressive chip on her shoulder. There's no overt evil Catholic church references, no furries, no gay agenda.
I used to love Gunnerkrigg Court, but Siddell's treatment of the "robot angel" bummed me out. That said, he's still a good storyteller.
